Dwayne Johnson watched Oppenheimer in an Imax theater, the same one that Christopher Nolan uses to check out his own films. Johnson was so amazed by the experience that he decided he wanted his new Christmas action movie, Red One, to also be available in Imax. He felt that using this high-quality technology would make Red One a real hit.
In a recent interview with Imax, Dwayne Johnson shared his goal for Red One: he wanted it to be a movie you could watch on the biggest screen possible. “Imax really has the biggest screens out there,” he said. While he was still filming Red One, he got a chance to see Oppenheimer in the Imax theater where Christopher Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas, watch their movies. Johnson even asked if he could sit in Nolan’s seat, and they showed him exactly where Chris usually sits.
Johnson went on to say, “When I watched Oppenheimer in Imax, I was blown away. I thought, ‘Wow, Red One on a screen like this with this technology would be incredible!’” He even sent a text to the movie’s director, Jake Kasdan, with a funny picture of himself and a shot of the Imax screen, showing just how awesome he thought it would be to use Imax for Red One.
Sadly, it doesn’t look like Red One will be the huge Imax hit that Oppenheimer was in summer 2023. The WWII drama, directed by Christopher Nolan, made almost $1 billion worldwide and won several Oscars, including best picture and best director. Cillian Murphy won best actor, while Robert Downey Jr. took home the award for best supporting actor.
Red One reportedly cost $250 million to make but earned only $26 million when it first opened internationally. The movie is set to release in the U.S. on November 15, but it’s expected to have a slow start, possibly earning around $20 million.
Critics haven’t been very kind to Red One either. Variety’s Owen Gleiberman commented, “This might be the least Christmas-spirited holiday movie Hollywood has ever made.” He described Red One as an action-packed, kidnap-rescue story with magical doors in toy stores, but he felt it lacked the charm and spirit you’d expect from a Christmas movie.
Amazon MGM Studios is bringing Red One to theaters across the U.S.
